이번 갤러리나우에서 열리는 “ Daniel Lee ”기획 초대 展은 국내외 문화 교류를 통해 역량 있는 해외 작가를 소개하고 창작 예술 활동을 지원하는 프로그램의 일환이다.
다니엘리(Daniel Lee)는 중국의 신화와 불교적 전통을 작업의 기점으로 삼고 있다. man과 animal의 합성어인 그의 작업는 아시아 사람들의 공통적 사유의식인 동물과 인간의 강한 연대감(특히 자신의 띠에 해당하는 동물과의 유사성에 대한 믿음으로 시작되는...), 인간이 하등동물로부터의 진화했다는 관점, 더 나나가서는 인간과 동물을 동일시하는 관점에서의 인간에 대한 깊은 성찰의 의미를 담고 있다. 유전자 조작, 복제 등 비인간성과 냉혹함, 그리고 인간에게 내재된 본성에 대한 의미를 독창적이고 경쾌하게 풀어내고 있다.
시리즈로 국내외에서 많은 주목을 받고 있는 다니엘리( Daniel Lee )는 1970년대 후반 작품 활동을 기점으로 현재까지 국내외 전시, 비엔날레, 아트페어 등 활발한 활동을 보여주고 있다. 이번 전시는 중국 전통문화를 엿 볼 수 있는 12간지(干支)를 작품 속에 아이콘으로 담아 표현하고 12개의 초상화를 등장시켜 현대 생활 문화 속에서 발견할 수 있는 아이러니한 이야기들을 만들어 낸다.
다니엘리는 이전부터 포토 몽타쥬 작업을 해왔던 것을 토대로 1992년부터 시작된 합성, 변형, 조합 등의 디지털 작업을 통해 현재와 과거의 공존된 시간성과 공간성을 작가만의 감성적 사유로 풀어내고 있다. 특히 처음 발표하는 2008년 신작 시리즈의 작품 속에 녹아있는 스토리텔링은 또 다른 상상력을 자극받게 될것이다. 이번 기획전은 2001년 , 2004년 시리즈, 2007년 시리즈, 2008년 시리즈 중에서 Daniel Lee의 대표적인 작품들로 선별하였으므로 다니엘리 작품 세계를 한눈에 볼 수 있는 전시가 될 것이다. 현재 뉴욕에서 활동하고 있는 작가가 내한하여 28일 오프닝 리셉션에 참석할 예정이다

동물원 풍경, 세상을 향한 발칙한 패러독스와의 만남
내가 평소에 가깝게 지내는 국립산림과학원의 나무박사 정헌관씨가 칠레 어느 동물원에 갔을 때 이야기다. 동물원 구경을 마치고 막 나서려는 순간 어떤 우리 하나가 눈길을 끌더란다. 이상한 것은 우리 안이 텅 비어있고 그 속에 커다란 거울이 놓여있을 뿐 아무것도 없었다. 두리번거리고 거울에 비친 자기 자신을 보는데 눈에 띄는 팻말이 하나 보였다.

세상에서 가장 위대한 동물이 거기에 있더라는 것이다.
세상을 동물원 밖까지 포함한 거대한 동물원세계에 비유한 관계자의 패러독스가 돋보이게 하는 이야기지만, 한 편으로 생각해 보면 소름 돋는 진실이 스며든 말이기도 하다.
인간과 동물의 경계는 과연 어디까지인가? 과연 인간은 지구상의 최상의 포식자 지위에서 만들어진 정의의 잣대로 만물을 가늠할 수 있는 존재인가. 다니엘 리(Daniel Lee)의 ‘매니멀 Manimals'은 사진 몇 장과 만난 나의 첫 소회는 남다르고 복잡한 것이었다.
작가의 뒤집어 내는 ‘세계의 진실’觀은 인간의 존엄성은 물론이거니와 다윈적 세계관, 즉 위대한 동물로서의 존엄성까지 조소의 대상으로 전락시킨다.
인류탄생으로부터 현재까지의 진행형들이 작가의 컴퓨터 그래픽화 된 정물로 압축되는 순간, 우리는 ‘나’와 동물의 생물학적 경계의 덫에 갇혀버린다.
오랜 경험의 세계로부터 알듯 모를 듯 달려온 지금의 ‘내’가 옮겨질 출구는 어디인가. 한 작가의 기이하고 밑도 끝도 없는 상상력의 끝 간 데를 읽을 수 있다면 이 사진전의 묘미는 별로가 아닐까 생각해본다. 저 먼 원시적 생명의 세계로부터 들려오는 끝없는 외침, '정글Jungle'에서 보여준 기발한 아이러니의 세계가 폭풍후의 혼돈처럼 몰아친 이후, 매니멀이 된 동물원 풍경은 어떤 모습으로 다른 이들의 눈을 통해 읽혀질까. 읽는 이들의 상상력만이 답해줄 일이다. “The Greatist Animal in the Would"의 경험을 멀리가 아닌 가까이서 한번 나눠보시길 권한다. 사진 한 장으로부터 다가온 충격도 우리의 생명을 용솟음치게 하나니. 合掌*
